You’ve probably heard of the placebo effect, when belief in a treatment helps your body heal. But there’s a darker twin that few people talk about: the nocicebo effect.


This silent saboteur doesn’t come from what’s given to you, it comes from what’s told to you.

And nowhere does this show up more than inside the cold glow of an MRI machine or after a well-meaning doctor says, “You have degenerative disc disease,” or “Your spine is a mess.”
